The holiday season can be especially stressful for caregivers who care for those living with Alzheimer’s disease. Putnam Ridge has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to share some caregiver survival tips.
Topping the list, caregivers are reminded that they need to put “staying healthy” as a priority. It may seem easier said than done, but avoiding germs, eating healthy, getting rest, seeing a doctor, exercising and taking time for themselves is important for both mental and physical health.
Next, caregivers should have a back-up plan for care of their loved one in the event that something unexpected comes up. They should remember to take one day at a time and not to stress if things do not go as well as planned. It is ok to have a perfectly imperfect holiday as they care for their loved one through their disease.
Last by not least, making memories is the most important thing. Following family traditions, spending time together, taking pictures, doing fun activities, and talking about happy times can help make the holidays more enjoyable.
From our family to yours, happy holidays from the staff and management of Putnam Ridge!
